ABOUT THE BOOK The Indian sub-continent emerged from the impact of British colonial rule at its Independence in 1947 with a history of experiences that were to greatly influence its political system. Having inherited a legacy of ideas practices and institutions from the British India was also partitioned into the now two separate states of India and Pakistan (part of which is now Bangladesh) in August1947. The role of the military in politics in the successor states of India and Pakistan - both sharing a similarity in cultural heritage and an inherited legacy of political neutrality from the British - has taken rather different interpretations since 1947. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Maroof Raza is the series editor of the Military Affairs series a commentator in both the print and television media on India’s security concerns and is a former Indian army officer. He was educated in India at Mayo College Ajmer and at St. Stephen’s College Delhi; and did his post graduate studies at King’s College in London and at Cambridge University. Maroof has served in the Indian army from 1980 with The Grenadiers and the Mechanised Infantry Regiments and as an instructor at the Indian military academy until his premature release from service in 1994.
