It is the most important small millet cultivated in more than 25 countries in Africa and Asia. India is the major producer in Asia and in India it is widely grown in the states of Karnataka Tamil Nadu Andhra Pradesh Maharashtra Orissa Gujarat Jharkhand Uttar Pradesh Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In India it is cultivated on 1.3 M ha with a production of 1.59 Mt and a productivity of 1.7 t ha-1 while in Andhra Pradesh it is grown in an area of 41000 ha with a production of 45000 t and a productivity of 1.19 t ha-1 (Ministry of Agriculture 2013).
