Money relationships and the drive for success threaten the beliefs and even personal safety of the characters featured in this collection of five tumultuous stories. In Gentlemen's Agreement The Inheritance and Indebted soldier-turned-private detective Mark Kent is hired to look for missing people and diamonds but finds he also must untangle family and business relationships. The mood changes with Lost Property which follows a bored public sector worker passed over for promotion and trapped in the security of his own job. A chance encounter with a fun-loving woman of independent means encourages him to have a different perspective on life. Finally The Window stands alone as an eyewitness account of a right-wing demonstration in a small town. The story draws parallels with left-wing violence and history and also touches on the role of women looking for equality in nationalist groups.
