[(Sir)] Leslie Stephen (1832 1904) was an author biographer critic and mountaineer. He wrote for several periodicals; was one of the earliest presidents of the Alpine Club; became the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography; and was editor of the Cornhill Magazine. It is interesting to note that Leslie Stephen was also the father of Vanessa Bell considered to be one of the major contributors to British portrait drawing and landscape art in the 20th century and Virginia Woolf author of Mrs. Dalloway Orlando and A Room of Ones Own among many others. This book George Eliot by Leslie Stephen is included in the English Men of Letters series of Macmillan & Co. Limited. (which is a bit misleading owing to the fact that George Eliot is the pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans). In his writing of George Eliot Stephens expounds on Eliots life; family; ideals; views; and her books using many of Eliots own words and letters both to and from friends and family members thus allowing the reader a greater insight into this fascinating woman.Further information on both writers will be found in the foreword provided by AlwaysWrite Ent. Many of the books offered by AlwaysWrite Ent. are provided exactly as the author presented them in their original format. All works have been entered and edited by hand and not merely scanned. They have been spell-checked and punctuation corrected where necessary.
