About The Book

Ghosts is one of Henrik Ibsen's most controversial and powerful plays known for its critique of societal norms and its exploration of the psychological impact of hidden truths. The play follows Mrs. Alving a widow who has spent years living in the shadow of her late husband's secrets. Her son Oswald returns home from Paris after a long absence and the play begins to unravel the dark legacies of the past that haunt the characters' lives. Mrs. Alving has spent years trying to shield Oswald from the truth about his father's immoral behavior but as the play unfolds it becomes clear that these ghosts of the past cannot be ignored any longer. The central conflict of Ghosts revolves around Mrs. Alving's attempt to protect her son from the same destructive fate that befell her. She has kept the truth about her husband's reckless lifestyle including his infidelities and his legacy of venereal disease hidden in an attempt to shield Oswald from suffering. However as Oswald begins to show signs of illness the truth slowly surfaces and Mrs. Alving is forced to confront the consequences of her past decisions. The play explores themes of moral hypocrisy the destructive nature of secrets and the generational impact of choices.
