Glaucoma is a set of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve and leads to a loss of vision. It is characterized by high intraocular pressure (IOP). Some types of glaucoma are open-angle glaucoma normal-tension glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma. It is caused by a variety of factors such as diet genetics ethnicity etc. If untreated it can result in blindness which cannot be reversed. Its symptoms include blurred vision redness of the eye mid-dilated pupil severe eye pain and nausea. The screening for glaucoma is performed by a standard eye examination or by techniques like tonometry gonioscopy scanning laser ophthalmoscopy optical coherence tomography etc. The mainstay of glaucoma treatment is lowering IOP through various pharmaceutical and surgical interventions.
