To escape the temptations of worldly achievement and to focus on true morality is the battle that Plato has Socrates recommend to his interlocutors in Gorgias—and to his readers. The debate which is first intended to be an examination into the worth of rhetoric quickly turns into a comparison of the merits of these two opposing lifestyles. Plato makes a succession of brilliant and audacious arguments to prove that only morality can bring a person true happiness and to disprove other points of view.
