Great Expectations Level 2 for Class 6

Great Expectations is set in the early Victorian England and Industrial Revolution time period. Many social changes took place at this time and the division between the poor and the rich was quite widespread. The manners of the upper class were very strict and conservative and they were expected to acquire traditional education and behave appropriately. Pip falls in love with a wealthy but heartless girl named Estella and he wants to make himself worthy of her. He receives a fortune from a secret benefactor and experiences a sudden rise from a blacksmith to an educated gentleman. He pursues education along with obtaining wealth success and high social class in the hopes of becoming worthy in the eyes of his beloved Estella. But he loses her when she marries his fellow student. Broken-hearted Pip goes abroad and makes a worthy enough fortune. He returns after eleven years and encounters a distressed Estella in the ruined gardens of the manor where he met her first. She has changed into a kind and friendly person and they walk hand in hand; Pip believing it to be forever.
