Excerpt from Great Masters of Landscape Painting. As regards modern times, it is the scarcely enviable privilege of my age to have come in contact with most of the landscape painters who have been the glory of our nineteenth century school. Some of the details which I give concerning them, their careers and their ideas, I have had either from their own lips or from their friends and acquaintances. But to criticise impartially the artists of one's own day, one must not be too near them, and it is for this reason that this volume deals only with those who are no longer with us.. With regard to the illustrations, I have endeavoured to give all the variety that my subject demanded. In addition to masterpieces consecrated by universal admiration, it has been my aim to reproduce many remarkable works which are less known, more particularly those now in America. I have added some facsimiles of original drawings by the masters, studies from nature or made in preparation for their pictures, and also some photographs of engravings, and lithographs of their works done by themselves or by other artists..
