When the German Army encircled the British Expeditionary Force in Dunkirk Canada expanded its commitment to the war effort. The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment was created initially as an infantry unit but it was converted into an armored regiment in January 1942.On June 6 1944 the regiment landed on the beaches of Normandy as part of the exploitation force for 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. The next day it fought the first Allied tank battle in Normandy.
