About The Book

France was a late adopter of romanticism. Victor Hugo (1802–85)'s Hernani (1830) sparked a significant uproar but eventually found favour.. This play served as a symbol of Romanticism's victory over Classicism. On the opening night of this play Hugo led a group of young poets and artists who essentially engaged in combat with the traditionalists sparking a scandal that ensured the success of the play and the movement as a whole.
