Heterogeneous Networks: Capacity and Coverage Enhancement

Due to the proliferation of mobile data services network operators worldwide are looking for methods to increase network capacity. The proliferation of data-centric smartphones that rely on new data services primarily video is driving this capacity requirement and is aggressively using up network bandwidth and capacity. Historically mobile networks were established using base stations with each station's placement meticulously planned and the network's architecture designed for optimal service signal coverage. Cell splitting or carrier addition can be used to increase capacity in these types of homogenous networks which solely use classic macro cells. Site acquisition has gotten significantly more challenging as the number of dense networks has increased. Expanding this type of network topology will not be cost effective in meeting the need for additional capacity and coverage. As a result new methods to the network's overall cell-based design are required which is why heterogeneous networks (i.e. HetNet's) are critical to the future of the mobile wireless sector. The unified comprehensive approach used in this book will appeal to Cellular Network Engineers Cellular Network Operations Engineers Regulatory Engineers Network Integrators Network Optimization Decision Makers Heterogeneous Network Designers and system suppliers.
