Higher Education in Sikkim

Tertiary Education i.e. Higher Education as popularly known world over is not known to Royal Sikkim till late 20th Century. When India attained its independence it became the Protector of the Royal Sikkim also. However in the year 1975 the Royal Sikkim has been annexed to India as its 22nd State. By then there was not even one institution of higher education in the State of Sikkim except two religious institutions and a night college. The citizens of Sikkim were introduced to higher education since 1977 only. First university level institution came into existence due to private initiative and thereafter a revolution in higher education started in Sikkim. While giving a brief insight into the history of education in Sikkim this book describes in a lucid way the origin and development of institutions imparting higher education in the state of Sikkim with particular emphasis on their present status. The prospects of higher education for Sikkim in 21st century have also been analyzed. This book will be of good reference value both to the educationists and students besides a valuable addition to the libraries world over.
