Historical reconstruction of the provincial children's home Axams
English

About The Book

In 1927 an infant home was built in Axams on behalf of the province of Tyrol. Alfred Soppelsa paediatrician and head of the Commission for Infant and Mother Protection suggested the establishment of the home. On the one hand infant mortality was very high especially after the First World War and on the other hand mothers were completely on their own when it came to looking after and caring for their newborns. The establishment of the home was intended to counteract the above-mentioned reasons. The author Martina Riedl traces in short chapters on the basis of historically significant dates and events how the infant home changed into the provincial children's home Axams and how its pedagogical objectives constantly changed. The quantitative study of the children's files and admission books from the years 1950-1980 and case histories can be used to illustrate the accommodation conditions of the time. The book offers a historical overview as well as the opportunity to get an idea of terms such as child welfare external placement or institutions of child and youth welfare.
