This work analyzes how ancient red-figure vase paintings and lost Greek wall paintings influenced the creation of early mosaics. The use of the silhouette and repeated themes in iconography are particularly significant. The majority of mosaics discussed are from the Greek city Olynthus. Most of the mosaics are located in rooms called andrones and cover subjects primarily related to male symposia such as Dionysus and satyrs.
