Nicolas Darvas, born in Hungary, trained as an economist at the University of Budapest. At the age of 23, unwilling to remain in Hungary under the threat of Nazi or Soviet control, he fled with a forged exit visa and fifty pounds sterling to sustain himself in Istanbul, Turkey. During his time off from his career as a dancer, Darvas immersed himself in the study of the stock market, reading around 200 books on the subject and spending up to eight hours a day studying.

Darvas began investing in stocks that were reaching their 52-week highs and was surprised when they continued to rise, allowing him to sell them for a significant profit. He relied heavily on Barron's Magazine for stock selection. At 39, after amassing his fortune, Darvas documented his strategies in the book How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market. The book details his innovative "Box System" for buying and selling stocks and remains a classic text in the field of stock market investing.
