Human Values: In The Pursuit Of Peace

Living each day as if we should die tomorrow (Helen Keller’s ‘Three Days to See’) leads to peace and happiness without regrets. People often expect the best from others and nature which can lead to a lack of positivity and hope. People may exhibit loving cultured and polite behavior with friends and strangers while why they might also harbor ill-natured traits like jealousy ego selfishness and comparisons with their own family members? The silence and the communication gap can hinder a person’s ability to treat his/her own family members with kindness and appreciation. This is similar to failing in ‘house’- exams but excelling in university exams. W.H. Auden’s poem “The Unknown Citizen” encourages finding happiness within oneself as the main purpose of life is to make purposeful living.Solving some of the mathematical problems requires using key concepts similarly teaching the purpose of life from childhood prevents misconceptions destructive behavior builds character and promotes maturity self development and harmonious life. Hindu thought consists of four ashrams: Brahmachari (student life)Grihasta(household life) Vanaprastha (retired life) &Sanyasa(renounced life).Brahmachari involves rigorous training character formation & selfrealization.Grihasta is the stage of maturity and responsibility teaching spiritual values and charity. Vanaprastha is the stage of decline in physical mental abilities focusing on spiritual matters & pilgrimage. Sanyasa is the stage of complete control of the mind and senses becoming detached and fearless & teaching self-realization and God-consciousness.President Sri APJ Abdul Kalam emphasizes proper work spiritual practices and living a humble life to prevent conflicts and misunderstandings fostering Universal Brotherhood.
