Humour in Conversation

The aim of this investigation was to examine the different genres of conversational humour and the contextual factors that may influence how it is received. What is it about a conversation that means ''you had to be there'' for the joke to be considered humorous? Using recorded data and an intimate knowledge of participants'' relationships this investigation identifies and explains the importance of contextual factors that could be considered crucial to maintaining humour in a conversation.
