I-em-hotep and Ancient Egyptian medicine: II. Prevention of valvular disease

The Harveian Oration of 1904 delivered before the Royal College of Physicians by Richard Caton M.D. F.R.C.P. focused on ancient Egyptian medicine particularly on I-em-hotep the god of medicine. Caton emphasized the importance of preventive treatment for valvular disease drawing parallels between rest for rheumatic joints and the lack of rest for the rheumatic heart. The oration discussed Egyptian physicians'' methods sanitation in ancient Egypt medicinal practices and drugs. Caton''s approach has successfully reduced chronic heart disease frequency advocating for preventive measures in recent endocardial cases to prevent permanent valvular heart disease.
