Pemphigus and other autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are intractable and potentially fatal tissue-specific autoimmune diseases of the skin which are characterized clinically by mucocutaneous blistering lesions. This group of diseases is classified into two subgroups i.e. intraepidermal immunobullous diseases (pemphigus diseases) and subepidermal immunobullous diseases (pemphigoid diseases) which show IgG and/or IgA autoantibodies against keratinocyte cell surfaces and epidermal basement membrane zone respectively. Pemphigus and AIBDs are first suspected by clinical and histopathological features and then various immunological examinations make the final diagnosis. The accurate diagnoses are essential for the best treatments for the patients of this group of diseases.
