Iatrogenic Factors and Periodontium

A tradition of conservatism in dental practice and the probable damaging effects of a healer’s action have long been accepted by the society since the time of Hippocrates. He describes the concept of Primum non nocere which means “first do no harm”.Iatrogenic comes from the Greek language “Iatros” means doctor or healer and “Gennan” means as a result”. Iatrogenic injury is a comprehensive term that may be defined as 'harm hurt damage or impairment that results from the activities of a doctor. The close relationship of iatrogenic factors with periodontal breakdown was originally recognized by Black 1912. The dental iatrogenic injury can occur on the tooth the periodontium or both.
