<p>This novel portrays Ding Guyun a sculptor renowned in art circles for his strict adherence to traditional moral standards. Known for his conservative and rigid nature his life takes a turn during the Second Sino-Japanese War when he encounters the strikingly beautiful young woman Lan Tianyu. Claiming to be his student Lan Tianyu captivates him with subtle advances. Mistaking her calculated charm for genuine affection Ding abandons his wife and abuses state funds to court her favor even planning to elope with her to Hong Kong. Unbeknownst to him he has fallen victim to Lan Tianyu's elaborate scam. Having lost both his reputation and fortune Ding stages his disappearance by faking death in a fire.
