If the Axolotl Dies Our Culture Dies

About The Book

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Xochimilco of Mexico City a World Heritage Site in 1987 because of its historical link to Aztec agriculture and its environmental uniqueness. Through this designation as a World Heritage Site Xochimilco’s identity has become almost paradoxical. In one sense it remains an area reminiscent of 14th century Aztec civilization yet it is also an urban neighborhood that looks no different than any other part of Mexico City. How can one balance the environmental needs of the land as well as the needs of the people? What does the future of Xochimilco look like? Will it even exist in 20 years?
