Immunology is the branch of biology that deals with the study of the immune system which is the body's defense mechanism against infectious agents pathogens and other foreign substances. Its primary function is to identify and eliminate pathogens such as bacteria viruses fungi and parasites as well as abnormal cells like cancer cells. Components of the Immune System: White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): These are key players in the immune response and include cells like lymphocytes (T cells B cells natural killer cells) neutrophils monocytes and macrophages. Lymphoid Organs: These are specialized tissues where immune cells mature and interact. Examples include the thymus bone marrow lymph nodes spleen and tonsils. Antibodies: These are proteins produced by B cells that specifically recognize and bind to foreign molecules (antigens) marking them for destruction by other immune cells.
