Impact of solid waste on groundwater in Bamako

Waste management in Bamako is facing growing challenges due to rapid urbanization and increased consumption. Landfills mainly composed of plastics contaminate soil and groundwater through leachates. This wastewater contains high levels of nitrates chlorides and heavy metals and has an alkaline pH.A study carried out in Bamako has confirmed that these pollutants find their way into the water of wells located near landfills endangering the health of local populations. The results underline the urgent need for more effective waste management strategies to protect water resources and the environment.
