These stories are an exercise in quiet desperation. The female protagonist in many of these stories is a grocery clerk who finds herself on the shelf like many of the dusty canned goods - that have never been touched. But her deep meditation on life keeps the reader engaged. The stories have a very poetic quality to them - that makes sense because Harman is a seasoned poet.
