Born in Gujranwala now in Pakistan in 1919 she came to India after the partition of the subcontinent in 1947. Her best-known work is a classic poem addressed to the great eighteenth-century Sufi poet Waris Shah in which she laments the carnage of Partition and calls on him to give voice from his grave. Amrita met Imroz a well-known artist in the 1960s and they became lifelong companions. They stayed together for more than forty years till her death after a long illness in October 2005. In this moving tribute she communicates her sense of deep wonder at their unique and unconventional relationship as also her profound admiration for the creative energy of these two extraordinary individuals.IN THE TIMES OF LOVE AND LONGING About the Author Amrita Pritam was an Indian maverick writer and poet. She is considered the first eminent female Punjabi writer novelist and poet of the 20th century. In her over 6 decades long career she produced over hundred works including poetry essays novels biographies etc. She was honoured with prestigious awards like the 'Sahitya Akademi' 'Bharatiya Jnanpith' and 'Padma Vibhushan' among many others. One of her most famous novels titled 'Pinjar' was made into a movie of the same name. Imroz is a famous painter. He met Amrita through an artist when she was looking for someone to design the cover of her book. Trapped in a loveless marriage at a young age Amrita Pritam dared to love - lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi at first and artist Imroz later. While her first love remained unfulfilled she spent the rest of her life living-in with a rather loving and caring Imroz.
