The book recounts Home''s experiences as a spiritualist medium and his encounters with spirits ghosts and other paranormal phenomena. Throughout the book Home describes his psychic abilities and the various manifestations of the spirit world that he encountered throughout his life. He recounts his first experiences with spirits as a young boy and the development of his abilities as he grew older. He also discusses his interactions with notable figures of his time including Napoleon III who consulted him on matters of state and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who was a firm believer in spiritualism. One of the most famous incidents recounted in the book is Home''s levitation in front of witnesses. Home describes several instances in which he appeared to defy gravity including one in which he reportedly levitated out of a window and back in through another. These incidents gained him a great deal of attention and notoriety and contributed to the spread of spiritualism as a movement. Despite the controversial nature of his work Home was highly regarded by many of his contemporaries who saw him as a genuine spiritualist and medium.
