Indian Media & Hijras The Paradox of Identity

Alarmingly they are more reviled and isolated now intensified by the callous apathetic and vindictive mainstream media that propagates negative stereotypes. The active role that media can play in combating gender discrimination and violence against the individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity no longer exists. The over-saturation of gender stereotypes in the media accounts for the misrepresentation of gender roles which gets embedded in the human mind and is passed on from generation to generation as an acceptable view. Thus an attempt is made to define the stand of the media for the gender identity of hijras and to get the answer of some important questions for the paradox of identity of hijras. The author hopes that the reader always remembers the fundamental rights of justice equality liberty and fraternity in our constitution irrespective of religion sex and creed.
