Space is not merely a spectacle. And very rarely do we get a view from inside of the bases of the fascinating journey that constitutes Indian space research. S. Sridhars account of the ISRO saga is luminous lucid and more importantly forward-looking.

It covers the breakthrough moments in our nations progress in this frontier field but what runs through his narrative is the core philosophy of the architects of this institution — a nationalistic mission satellite technology as a tool for the integration of a nascent nation and for progress measured in hard economic and social terms. What I liked is this underlying theme.

Ultimately the benefits of space research have to be felt by the poorest and the weakest as Gandhiji put forth in his oft-quoted talisman statement. Sridhar succeeds in continually focusing attention on this key aspect of all scientific research as he tells us a very readable story.

S.
