Inspiration and Interpretation by John William Burgon is a strong defense of the divine inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible. Burgon an Anglican clergyman and scholar wrote this work as a response to the rising critical approaches to biblical interpretation in the 19th century particularly the influence of higher criticism which questioned the traditional views of the Bible’s authorship and historical accuracy. Burgon firmly believes that every part of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation is divinely inspired and free from error. He argues that the Bible should not be treated like any other human text subject to skepticism or doubt. Instead it should be revered as the infallible word of God. His book takes issue with scholars who attempt to dissect the Bible using modern critical methods viewing their approach as undermining the authority of scripture.
