About The Book

In the book Carpenter explores the concept of gender and sexuality among various indigenous cultures from around the world. He argues that there are intermediate types of gender and sexuality that exist in these cultures which do not conform to the typical Western binary of male and female. Carpenters research draws on examples from many cultures including the Berdache of North America the Hijra of India and the Faafafine of Samoa. He shows how in these societies individuals who do not conform to the traditional binary gender roles are often respected members of their communities and may even hold special religious or social roles. Carpenters work challenges the prevailing attitudes of his time towards gender and sexuality which were often based on a narrow Western perspective. He argues that we must look beyond our own cultural biases to understand the full range of human diversity and experience. Overall Intermediate Types among Primitive Folk is an important work in the history of anthropology and a valuable contribution to our understanding of gender and sexuality. It remains relevant today as we continue to grapple with issues of gender and identity in a rapidly changing world.
