Internal migration to the district of Bamako and surroundings

This study focuses on internal migration to Bamako and its surroundings. It analyzes the reasons for departure and the socio-economic and spatial integration strategies. Indeed the centrality of the socio-economic infrastructure has attracted people from the interior of the country to settle in Bamako for several reasons. During the period of drought that the country experienced in the 1970s and 1980s many families migrated to Bamako. Over the years generations and generations of migrants settled in Bamako. Older relatives are supporters of the newcomers. Upon arrival they are welcomed by relatives or acquaintances who host them for a while. This stage is very important in the life of the migrants. They gradually integrate the socio-economic and spatial fabric. The reception allows the migrants to get organized to become familiar with the host environment. This process also allows them to have access to a job and then housing.
