A series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 were so powerful that the Mississippi River temporarily flowed backwards and were felt on the East Coast. </p><p></p><p>The novel follows three pre-teens who live in a town that borders the Fields an area of the United States that was walled-off following a seismic recurrence and nuclear accident. They see the prisoners that arrive by train and watch them disappear beyond the border in buses. They want to know the truth that's hidden behind the barbed-wire fences.</p>
