Jayanta Bhatta on Sabda Pramana

Dr.Seshagiri Rao's work Jayantha Bhatta on Sabda Pramana is an important work in the field of Indian Philosophy. Sabda as pramana is unique as the understanding of linguistic utterances gives us more knowledge about the world than pratyaksa (perception) and anumana (inference). Sabda in its varying forms is one of the fundamental sources for the sorts of experience and understanding that fall specifically with in the domain of religious discourse. The ramifications are enormous when we consider that sabda constituted by sruti such as the upanisads and certain other text of vedas forms the basis for the authentication and acceptance of some very fundamental beliefs and ideas that are considered to be central to Hindu tradition. However given the preoccupatiopn of Indian philosophy towards metaphysics epistemology and even ethics the philosophy of language is not sufficiently explicated in the early stages of Nyaya philosophy. This gap is filled by Jayanta Bhatta.
