“Rainwater is the chief article of diet at supper.” Jerome K. Jerome was an English writer best remembered for his humorous travelogue Three Men in a Boat (1889). The novel received wide acclaim leading to a sequel Three Men on the Bummel (1900). Harris and George take a boating trip down the River Thames with their fox terrier and share anecdotes and descriptions of passing landmarks. But the jaunt turns into chaos when they face unreliable weather forecasts problems with the tow rope havoc created by the dog the floating body of a woman and a load of hilarious mishaps and adventures. Written as a guidebook chronicling London in the 1880s Three Men in a Boat resonated with readers due to its comic overtone. Today this novel is considered a classic and has been translated into many languages.
