Unlike his contemporaries John March Walter Clavell Matthias Vincent and Job Charnock he had no direct intercourse with the ruling authorities of his day nor did he take any part in obtaining grants for trade redress of grievances or extension of territory in the early days of the East India Company. His fame rests on different grounds.
