John Moore was bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine during a critical period in its growth. He was shaped by his early years in Ireland during the Potato Famine his adolescence in Charleston S.C. his education in Rome and France and the early years of his priesthood in the grip of the Civil War. He was named the second bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1877 during a time of rapid growth and challenges from yellow fever epidemics fires and hurricanes. He relied on the support of Jesuits Benedictines and other religious orders to establish parishes and schools. Among his benefactors were Henry Flagler and Mother Katharine Drexel. Known as Silent John Moore was tireless in his efforts to meet the growing needs of his diocese.
