John Searle

About The Book

This book is a collection of my articles from recent years devoted to the philosophy of consciousness of one of the most influential contemporary analytical philosophers John Searle who entered into a debate with functionalism and justified his view of consciousness from the point of view of biological naturalism. Searle's philosophical research has gained international recognition as evidenced by his extensive bibliography which has been translated into many languages and the fact that he has lectured at various universities around the world as a visiting professor. The first chapter of the book is devoted to J. Searle's philosophy of action: his theories of speech acts and the intentionality of consciousness. The second chapter begins with a consideration of J. Searle's fundamental ontology which represents the position of a representative of scientific naturalism. In the following articles of the second chapter we offer critical remarks on J. Searle's views on materialism and dualism namely we consider the alternative position of biological naturalism held by the philosopher justifying his solution to the mind-body problem. The purpose of this work is to systematize J. Searle's research for students of all philosophical specialties.
