One of the most heinous of injustices that prevailed in our nation was the “Sati Pratha”. This depraved custom compels the widow to commit suicide by setting herself on her husbands funeral pyre.The word Sati goddess refers to an angelic lady who is dedicated and submissive. Who is to put it simply pure as a moon without any black spots. Being a faithful wife to her husband and making a solemn pledge to burn at his side when he passed away earned her the title of Sati Mata.A girl began her journey from a conservative Brahmin family in a remote village of Bengal during early nineteenth century. She was forced to sit on her husband’s funeral pyre but her fate led her to a better life afterwards. After being saved she went on to live a free and loving life. It was a time when some members of disadvantaged castes in India freely embraced Christianity. The colonial system and the church both played a significant part in the social transformation of Indian society.
