جمع شيخ الأدب الشعبي سلام الراسي على مدى عقود من الزمن، عيونَ التراث الشعبي اللبناني من أمثالٍ وحِكَم، فوثّق التجربة الشعبيّة اللبنانيّة، والريفيّة الجنوبيّة منها بشكل خاص، بأسلوبه الفذّ الذي امتاز بالسلاسة وبمزاوجةٍ بارعة بين اللهجتَيْن الفصحى والمحكيّة اللبنانيّة. لم يكتفِ الراسي بدور الأديب بالمعنى الكلاسيكي وإنّما تجاوزه ليؤدّيَ دور المؤرّخ وعالم الاجتماع الذي ساهم في حفظ إرثٍ شفويٍّ مهدّدٍ دائمًا بالإندثار. حكايات وطرائف، قصص وأخبار، نصائح وأقوال، حكم وأمثال، أمضى سلام الراسي عدّة سنوات يحصدها عن ألسنة الناس الذين مات بعضهم وشاخ البعض الآخر، فذبلت في ذاكرتهم الأحداث والأحاديث. وكان للراسي فضل حفظ هذا التراث الشعبيّ العريق، إذ قام ينفض عنه غبار النسيان ويعيد لقصصه رونقها وجمالها، ولأخباره حلاوتها وطراوتها، جمعها بالفعل لئلّا تضيع! <br>The Sheikh of Folk Literature' Salam al-Rasi collected over decades the gems of Lebanese folk heritage from proverbs and wisdom documenting the Lebanese folk experience especially the southern rural one in his unique style distinguished by fluency and a skillful blend of both Modern Standard Arabic and Lebanese colloquial dialect. Al-Rasi was not content with the role of a writer in the classical sense but went beyond it to play the role of historian and sociologist who contributed to preserving an oral heritage always threatened with extinction. Tales and anecdotes stories and news advice and sayings proverbs and wisdom - Salam al-Rasi spent several years harvesting them from the tongues of people some of whom died and others aged and events and conversations faded in their memories. Al-Rasi had the merit of preserving this ancient folk heritage shaking off the dust of oblivion and restoring to his stories their splendor and beauty and to his news their sweetness and freshness collecting them indeed 'so they wouldn't be lost!
