Kathleen's Diamonds; or She Loved a Handsome Actor

About The Book

Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller was the pen name for Mittie Frances Clark Point taken from the name of her second husband. She wrote around 80 dime novels from 1881 to 1915 and was one of the best-known authors of her time.. When I first picked up Mrs. Miller's The Bride of the Tomb I never really imagined that I would devote quite so much of my life to celebrating the mad genius of that work and its author. There's just nothing else quite like a Mrs. Miller novel: a perfect blend of straight-faced absurdity and illogic logic peppered with just the right number of hilarious lines shocking plot twists and startling atrocities against authorial restraint.. Kathleen's Diamonds is no exception. While the whole feels like a bit less than the sum of its parts this time around there are still plenty of rewards for the patient reader. Sure the story may drag for a chapter or two here and there but Mrs. Miller comes through with enough convoluted developments to maintain her audience's engagement. While the overarching theme of woman's inhumanity to woman may occasionally suggest the more sedate form of story paper fiction there's just enough murder madness and mayhem to remind you that you are indeed reading Mrs. Miller. In any case it's worth braving the rough patches just to reach the action-packed finale in which two breathless paragraphs are almost guaranteed to make your jaw drop. - Demian Katz rated it 5 of 5 stars at www.goodreads.com
