For seventeen years it was an unspoken line they never crossed-a place sealed off by silence and something heavier than a memory.</p><p>But then everything changed and suddenly my siblings and I were being sent to spend the summer there. With promises of just for a little while and we'll be safe.</p><p>Our cousin Jimmy runs security on the island. He promised our parents he'd keep us out of trouble that we'd be looked after. But there were things he didn't tell us. Stuff he didn't tell them either.</p><p>And sometimes late at night I wonder if that silence almost cost us everything. Now I see the island for what it is not just a place but a wound. And whether we talk about it or not it's still bleeding. Some truths are like that. They don't stay buried. They wait.</p>
