<p><i>La Gerusalemme Liberata</i> (Jerusalem Delivered) is an epic poem by Torquato Tasso first published in 1581. It tells a largely fictionalized version of the First Crusade in which Christian knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon battle Muslims to take Jerusalem. </p><p>Tasso began work on the poem in the mid-1560s and it saw print in unauthorized versions before its complete and authorized publication in 1581. <i>La Gerusalemme Liberata</i> is composed of twenty octaves and combines elements of Renaissance literary traditions. This edition also includes commentary by Ugo Foscolo and Pietro Fraticelli.</p><p>This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
