The ladies of the mountain house show true grit. They have the strength to help their men and to protect their families. Bertha runs her home quietly but firmly. Everyone knows you don't make Bertha angry. Her husband Tommy treads lightly around her. He gives her just enough to keep her informed but not enough to see the violence or the danger. He finds out she can handle both. Liz trucks her family halfway around the world to buy decorations for the mountain house at the request of Bertha. Liz does this to protect them. Denny learns to hold her own against an angry husband who needs a few good lessons from Charlie. While doing so she finds her backbone and stands up for herself. She takes lessons from a most unusual source. Carol finds love with an associate of Tommy's. They buy a small home and live close to her family.
