في البدء كان الاسم. بضعة أحرف، صوت، يطلقونه عليك فترث معه جعبة كاملة فخّخها الحب والانتماء: للعائلة وللوطن، للمدرسة وللشجرة الهرمة أمام المنزل، لرائحة الجدّة ولصورٍ عائليّة بالأبيض والأسود. في البدء كانت الهويّة، وصمة، لعنة، فرزٌ بيولوجيّ ظرفيّ واعتباطيّ لكائن يتنفّس للمرّة الأولى، يبكي للمرّة الأولى في موقفٍ هو الأصدق أمام فوضى الوجود.يحمل بطل هذه الرواية أوطانًا كثيرة، ووجوهًا أكثر. هو عربيٌّ وليس عربيًّا. بل إنّه الأكثر عروبةً، والأكثر لبنانيّةً. فمن بين كلّ الأوطان التي تمزّق كيانه، اختار الأكثر جحودًا، ولم يُجبَر عليه. خذله، وظلّ مريضًا بحبّه. الآن هو ابن الأوطان كلّها. كلّ المنازل منازله، ولا منزل له. ميناؤه الوحيد صدر جدّةٍ غابت، وروحه، اسمه الأول، بكوته الأولى، هويّته الأولى، تأبى إفلات تلابيبها...In the beginning was the name. He is Arab yet not Arab. In fact he is the most Arab and the most Lebanese. Among all the homelands that tore at his being he chose the most tenacious and it wans't imposed upon him. It betrayed him yet he remained sick with love for it. Now he is the son of all homelands. All houses are his house and he has no home. His only refuge was the chest of a grandmother who vanished and his soul his first name his first cry and his first identity refuse to let go of these ties...
