About The Book

In the long hot summer of 1984 life in the little Pennine village of Briseley T'ill centres around the cricket club. A chance encounter with the spoilt daughter of the local MP leads to a tempestuous affair for nineteen years old Barnett Hall rising star of the village cricket team. By contrast an unlikely candidate for romance is Edward Decker the forty-six years old village constable who has led a lonely celibate life for over twenty years. The accidental discovery of a body buried in the Sinkhole close to the cricket ground throws the even tenor of rural life into turmoil. Suspicion falls on Barnett and Edward Decker is torn between loyalty to his friends and fellow players on one hand and his duty as a policeman on the other. To further complicate the issue police resources are stretched to the limit by the politically motivated miner's strike. Decker alone has to investigate what appears to be a motiveless crime and track down the ruthless killer. His patience and local knowledge is finally rewarded by success ... but at what price as he discovers that even his closest friends have secrets he never suspected. His loyalty is stretched to breaking point. At the final count Decker stands alone without support unarmed facing a ruthless proficient killer.
