About The Book

<p><em>Laughing Boy</em> by Oliver La Farge is a coming-of-age novel set in 1915 among the Navajo people of the American Southwest. It follows Laughing Boy a young Navajo man skilled in traditional crafts and proud of his heritage as he meets and falls in love with Slim Girl a Navajo woman who has been raised in a white-run boarding school.</p><p>Their romance is marked by cultural tension-Slim Girl struggles to reconcile her Western education with her Navajo identity while Laughing Boy tries to remain true to his traditions. As they attempt to build a life together their relationship is tested by external pressures and personal conflict.</p><p>The novel explores themes of cultural identity love and the clash between tradition and modernity. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1930.</p><p></p><p></p>
