Le colonel Chabert autrefois héros de la bataille d'Eylau est présumé mort et revient à Paris après des années d'errance. Il découvre que sa femme s'est remariée et a hérité de sa fortune. </p><p>Rejeté par la société et méconnaissable il lutte pour prouver son identité et récupérer son nom et son honneur. Son avocat Derville est témoin de sa déchéance et de son combat inégal contre une société corrompue par l'argent et les apparences.
