When I was a child it was common to spend most of your free time outside away from home. Unfortunately I often find today both in my private life and in school that this is no longer the case. This circumstance sparked my interest in investigating the importance of extracurricular learning locations. Since I did not have any experience with extracurricular learning locations in secondary school myself I decided to conduct a survey of the current situation at new secondary schools in Lower Austria. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the importance of extracurricular learning locations in biology and environmental studies at new secondary schools in Lower Austria. To this end the theoretical part of this thesis deals with the topics of teaching principles in biology and environmental studies the necessity of extracurricular learning locations and the definition and classification of extracurricular learning locations. This is followed by a didactic presentation of a field trip to a sewage treatment plant. The research section presents the answers to the research questions obtained through guided interviews with teachers.
